The 10 words of the week #17
Each week, we revisit 10 words that have fallen out of everyday use. Will you manage to work all 10 words into your conversations this week?
1. Apocope : Noun, feminine. The dropping of one or more syllables from the end of a word. For example, "auto" for "automobile", or "cinema" which is itself an apocope of "cinematograph".
2. Psalmody : Noun, feminine. A monotonous chant or recitation.
3. Tautophony : Noun, feminine. Excessive repetition of the same sound. Similar to alliteration. The line "Pour qui sont ces serpents qui sifflent sur vos têtes?" is a famous example.
4. Brunante : Noun, feminine. A Canadian term. The decline of day; twilight. A period also known as the "blue hour".
5. Escarcelle : Noun, feminine. A purse worn on a belt, in former times. In modern usage: a wallet.
6. Cenotaph : Noun, masculine. An empty tomb erected in memory of a dead person. A funerary monument that does not contain the body of the person it honours.
7. Baliverne : Noun, feminine. Idle talk; nonsense.
8. Onomastics : Noun, feminine. Relating to proper nouns. The study of proper nouns and their origins.
9. Rubiginous : Adjective. Of the colour of rust, or covered in rust.
10. Phalène : Noun, feminine. A nocturnal insect with four wings. A moth.
