Words of the week #21

Every Wednesday we bring you 10 forgotten or rarely spoken words. Ready to drop them into conversation this week?

1. Virtuosity : Noun, feminine. Great skill, great talent.

2. Jadis : Adverb. Formerly, long ago, in a distant era. Originally, this term meant "a few days ago".

3. Haptic : Adjective. Relating to the sense of touch.

4. Férir : Verb. To strike with force and determination.

5. Anaphora : Noun, feminine. A rhetorical device that repeats a word or series of words at the start of successive sentences. Example: "Rome, the sole object of my resentment! / Rome, to whom your arm came to immolate my lover! / Rome, that saw you born, and that your heart adores! / Rome, finally, that I hate because it honours you!" — Corneille, Camille in Horace, Act IV, Scene 5.

6. Gastropod : Noun, masculine. A mollusc that moves by crawling on its foot.

7. Billevesée : Noun, feminine. Nonsense, twaddle.

8. Consumption : Noun, feminine. The process of being consumed or destroyed.

9. Palatal : Adjective. Said of sounds produced by pressing the tongue against the palate (k, g, etc.)

10. Stochastic : Adjective. Governed by chance; randomly determined.
