Words of the week #20

Every week we bring you 10 words that are rarely used in conversation, or have fallen almost entirely out of use. Shake up your daily exchanges by slipping these 10 words into your week!

1. Versicolour : Adjective. Of varied or changing colours.

2. Accoiser : Verb. To soothe, to calm.

3. Synoptic : Adjective. Relating to a synopsis. Providing an overview at a single glance.

4. Idoine : Adjective. Perfectly suited, entirely appropriate.

5. Fuliginous : Adjective. Soot-coloured, or producing soot.

6. Catharsis : Noun, feminine. According to Aristotle, the idea that a spectator purges, purifies and frees themselves of their emotions by watching a dramatic play. Exorcising one's demons through example or fiction. In psychoanalysis, a method aimed at becoming aware of, externalising and then overcoming repressed traumas and the emotions they provoked.

7. Heir : Noun, masculine. A direct-line heir.

8. Nychthemeron : Noun, masculine. A period of 24 hours comprising one day and one night.

9. Solecism : Noun, masculine. A grammatical error that violates the rules of syntax. Examples: "If I would have known, I wouldn't have come"; "To remember of something" instead of "To remember something".

10. Coalition : Noun, feminine. A temporary alliance formed to fight a common adversary.
