How to Optimise Large File Uploads on WordPress
Like any WordPress user, your primary goal is to manage your site in a straightforward way so as to avoid wasting time. In this article, we are therefore going to share some tips on different ways to handle WordPress — particularly when it comes to uploading large files or a large number of images — that will save you time.
Have you already looked for tools to optimise your file upload times on your site, only to find it was a waste of time? We are going to tell you about the tools and techniques that will genuinely save you time when uploading to WordPress.
Optimising Image Uploads
You may have already noticed that uploading a large number of images to WordPress — without knowing a few quicker techniques — can turn into a real source of frustration, forcing you to repeat the same action over and over.
But we have the solution! A solution that is much faster and allows you to upload a large number of images or files simultaneously: FTP.
FTP
FTP is the File Transfer Protocol. It allows you to transfer files located on your computer or on your web hosting server to your WordPress media library in a simple and fast manner.
You will need to download an FTP client to get started — here you have the choice between Filezilla (free and easy to use), FireFTP, and many others. Choose the one that suits you best.
Once you have downloaded your FTP client, you will first need to upload the files via FTP to the WordPress Media Library. However, you will notice that the files do not appear in the library. You will therefore need to download another plugin — for example WP-CLI or, even easier to use, the Free Add From Server Plugin — which will allow you to register these files in your library rather than leaving them at the upload stage.
We will take the example of using the Free Add From Server Plugin. In addition to being free, it is the easiest to use.
Free Add From Server Plugin
Once you have downloaded and activated this plugin, simply go to your WordPress dashboard, click on "Media", and select "Add From Server".
Once you have done that, you can navigate to the folder you uploaded previously. A list of the uploaded files will appear, and all you need to do is tick the files you wish to import, then click "Import".
A success message will be displayed. Your files are now available within the WordPress media library.
If the upload content is particularly large, simply repeat this process. Despite that, it will save you a considerable amount of time on a daily basis.
There you have it — you now know how to save time when uploading files or a large number of images. Just remember the following steps:
- Upload the file via FTP
- Register this file in your WordPress media library using your Server plugin
