5 tips for great design that attracts clients

Yumea·

Designs are everywhere — whether used on a website, on billboards, in television adverts, in print materials or even standard emails, they have a powerful effect on anyone who looks at them. Clearly, designs have a considerable impact on their audience. Whether they are professionals or not, people can tell whether a design is good or bad. The goal, therefore, is to create one that is good enough to catch the eye and ultimately drive sales for your business.

Here are 5 elements you must follow to produce great design:

1: The rule of thirds

This rule will help you produce great design with perfect symmetry and balance. The objective of the rule of thirds is simple: it helps you achieve greater balance and harmony when designing your visuals. The human eye is drawn to symmetry and harmonious design. The goal is to avoid a dull visual where the left half mirrors the right, or the top mirrors the bottom. The rule of thirds keeps the visual interesting without the design becoming overly artistic. Imagine a grid divided into 3 columns and 3 rows over every image. Place the most important elements at the 4 intersection points.

You can apply the rule of thirds to photographs, websites, newsletters and more. For an even greater impact, consider placing your calls to action on one of the intersection points.

2: Hierarchy

Hierarchy is one of the most important points to consider when creating great design. You need to distinguish important elements from less important ones. It is a way of directing the human eye towards the message you want to communicate.

You must apply this rule correctly in order to create a design that helps the reader find information quickly and easily. Be mindful of information overload, which only smothers the visual and confuses your readers. That is the whole point of giving certain information greater prominence.

3: Typography

Typography's mission is to deliver your message in the most concise, effective and appealing way possible.

Here are a few tips for good typography:

  • Do not use more than 3 typefaces in a design.
  • Do not use more than 3 colours.
  • Use hierarchy for headings, paragraphs, etc.
  • Use white space and do not fill an entire page, email or leaflet with text.
  • Use typography appropriate to your objectives and your message.

4: Simplicity

Sometimes the best designs are the simplest — whether for your website, your emails, banners or logo. Never overload your design or over-complicate its content; there is nothing worse than presenting your audience with information that is too convoluted. Air out your design, keep the essentials, and the result should be clean, easy and quick to read.

5: Attention to detail

Create your design with care and precision. Neglect nothing. One can admire a design without quite knowing why — which is precisely why every small detail must be considered and studied meticulously. Check alignment, typeface, colours (as discussed above) and every other element that matters in the realisation of your design.

By following these 5 tips to the letter, you can be sure of creating great design. Always keep in mind that a strong visual catches the eye, prompts action, and therefore drives sales.
