The 10 Words of the Week #14

1. Incognoscible : Adjective. That which is impossible to know, that surpasses our understanding. Incomprehensible.

2. Protean : Adjective. That which takes many different forms or has a changeable appearance. The term derives from the name of Proteus, the sea god who could change shape. Example: Autism and schizophrenia are protean disorders; symptoms vary greatly from one patient to another.

3. Circumlocution : Noun, feminine. A roundabout way of expressing a thought.

4. Leonine : Adjective. Relating to or reminiscent of a lion, either physically or metaphorically.

5. Serendipity : Noun, feminine. A scientific discovery made unexpectedly, while searching for something else or not searching at all. For instance, the microwave oven is a serendipity. A researcher working in a magnetron factory for radar noticed that a chocolate bar in his pocket had melted after passing close to one of his running machines. This gave him the idea for a machine capable of heating food using microwaves…

6. Phenakistoscope : Noun, masculine. A device that creates the illusion of movement by rapidly displaying a series of images in succession.

7. Zoetrope : Noun, masculine. A cylindrical toy operating on the same principle as the phenakistoscope.

8. Sinister : Adjective. Performing a movement counter to that of clock hands.

9. Shifty : Adjective. Someone who appears malevolent, sly, deceitful, cunning.

10. Logorrhoea : Noun, feminine. An unceasing flood of words. A language disorder resulting in an irrepressible need to talk.
