The 10 Words of the Week #13

Each week, we diligently bring you 10 unusual words that tend to be avoided in spoken language.
The challenge you must rise to? Successfully using each of these 10 words at least once this week!

1. Commute : Verb. To change a sentence into a lesser one. Example: To commute a death sentence to a life sentence.

2. Apologue : Noun, masculine. A narrative discourse, often allegorical, aimed at illustrating a moral lesson. Example: The fables of La Fontaine or Aesop, and the tales of Perrault or the Brothers Grimm, are all apologues.

3. Rejoice with : Verb. To share in someone's joy over something pleasant that has happened to them. Example: "I rejoice with you on the birth of your child, all the more so since it is not I who will have to get up every hour of every night for the next 10 months."

4. Abhor : Verb. To hold something or someone in horror. Example: He abhorred that film, which did not stop him from going to see each successive sequel every year so that he could abhor the saga even more.

5. Emmetropic : Adjective. Said of an eye with normal vision.

6. Idiosyncrasy : Noun, feminine. The particular reaction or way of being of each individual in a given situation.

7. Claudicate : Verb. To move clumsily, to limp.

8. Dexter : Adjective. Relating to the right-hand side of a thing or person. The word "ambidextrous" etymologically means "having two right hands."

9. Smaragdine : Adjective. Of an emerald-green colour.

10. Wall-eyed (wall eyes) : Locution. Said of eyes that are of different colours.
