The 10 Words of the Week #12

Each week we revisit 10 forgotten words from spoken language. Take up the challenge by using these 10 words in your conversations this week. You have until next Wednesday!

1. Psittacism : Noun, masculine. A concept in psychology. The mechanical repetition of words or phrases, like a parrot, without understanding the meaning of those terms.

2. Superfluous : Adjective. Said of an addition that is redundant or unnecessary. Example: A belt is superfluous for someone wearing braces.

3. Vesanic : Adjective. Relating to mental illness or madness. Example: Someone talking to a chair is obviously engaging in vesanic discourse (unless you can hear the chair reply, in which case you yourself are probably of a vesanic mind).

4. Diurnal : Adjective. Relating to what occurs during the day. The opposite of nocturnal. Example: Unlike the owl, pigeons are diurnal animals.

5. Penultimate : Adjective. Second to last. Example: Thursday is the penultimate working day before the weekend.

6. Antepenultimate : Adjective. Third to last. Example: Wednesday is the antepenultimate working day before the weekend; October is the antepenultimate month of the year.

7. Maelstrom : Noun, masculine. A whirlpool, a movement that sweeps everything along in its path. Originally a Norwegian term denoting a sea current, since used metaphorically as well. Example: In Les Misérables, Victor Hugo wrote "Paris is a maelstrom in which everything is lost."

8. Scene : Noun, masculine. A public scandal or noisy dispute. Example: Kicking up a scene upon seeing the restaurant bill.

9. Elude : Verb. To avoid or dodge a problem or topic.

10. Diligence : Noun, feminine. Zeal, eagerness in the execution of a task.
