WordPress inaccessible: what methods can you use to fix the problem?

Yumea·

Running a WordPress site is not always plain sailing. Security issues, updates, or backup problems, not to mention a simple bug — at any moment you may find yourself facing a significant obstacle. One of the most frustrating is losing access to your site, even as an administrator. This problem can stem from several causes, but the important thing is to be able to resolve it. We will identify the causes and do our best to help you put an end to this embarrassing situation in a few simple steps:

Your WordPress site is blocked

Updates, despite their good intentions, can sometimes be the cause of blockages on your WordPress site. When you update a theme or a plugin, your site may become inaccessible for an indeterminate period. Before going into full panic mode, it is important to ask yourself a few questions. Identify your error message before taking action. The problem can come from several sources:

– Your WordPress site is disabled because maintenance mode is stuck

– The problem is caused by one or more plugins

– The problem is caused by a theme

– The issue may come from the .htaccess file, which needs checking

1/ Forced maintenance is causing your site to malfunction

Sometimes an error message appears when your site encounters a problem. This can be worded in various ways. When the message reads "your site is unavailable due to maintenance", this means you need to take a look at your FTP client, in the root directory. You may also find a file called type.maintenance. If all your updates are complete, delete this file, as it may be the cause of the problem.

If no error message appears, the problem does not stem from maintenance:

2/ Your problem is caused by a plugin

If you identify the problem at the plugin level, the simple advice is to deactivate it. And to do this, you do not need access to the WordPress administration panel. There are several methods: deactivating the plugin via the database, or via the FTP client.

To do this, simply find your plugins directory and rename it: /plugins. This file is generally found in wp-content and can deactivate all plugins at once.

If your site is now accessible, relax! This means the problem was indeed caused by a faulty plugin. Rename it back to its original name, then repeat this process for all the subdirectories relating to each plugin.

If you prefer to deactivate plugins from the database, your task is to find the wp_options table, then the row associated with active_plugins, and delete the associated value (on the right).

3/ The problem is caused by a theme

If nothing has been resolved after checking at the plugin level, stay calm! The issue may be caused by a corrupted theme. In the same way as with maintenance, go to your FTP client and navigate to the /themes subdirectory of /wp-content and rename it.

As with plugins, you can access the database and rename the active theme in the wp_options table. All you then need to do is replace the values of the template and stylesheet rows with the name of a default WordPress theme.

4/ The problem is caused by the .htaccess file

If, despite all these steps, your WordPress is still inaccessible, remember to check your .htaccess file. Rename it temporarily to see whether the problem originates here, then try logging back in as administrator.

In conclusion, you will understand that there is no need to panic immediately if this situation arises out of nowhere. Relax! Do not put yourself through additional stress without first trying these different solutions. If your problem is stubborn and persists, contact a maintenance service that will be able to find more detailed solutions!
