How to Perfect Your SEO with Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)

Yumea·

Would you like to increase your site's visibility through SEO but are not quite sure how to go about it?
We have already covered this subject in several past articles, starting with the article that briefly explains the workings of SEO. But there is another component of SEO that we had not yet addressed: Latent Semantic Indexing.

What is Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI)?

Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), or Analyse Sémantique Latente in French, involves analysing a text and its themes — understanding the connection between different terms or keywords in order to identify the subject or subjects being addressed.

Let us imagine the web page of a professional proofreader.

An LSI analysis could identify terms such as "corrections", "manuscript", "spelling", "proofreading", or "grammar" included in the page.
This analysis takes into account words and expressions that are linked to the theme of professional proofreading, without necessarily being synonyms.
"Accredited proofreader" might be a synonym of "professional proofreader".
"Manuscript proofreading" is by no means synonymous with "professional proofreader"; yet LSI analysis allows one to understand that the two expressions belong to the same subject area.

What Does Latent Semantic Indexing Bring to SEO?

A Refinement of Search Engines

In the early days of the internet, search engines relied solely on keywords: you searched for a word or phrase and the engine returned all pages where that word or phrase appeared.
Search engines then improved, taking into account synonyms of the searched terms and homonyms (to properly differentiate, for example, a page about a professional proofreader from one about proofreading software).

Latent Semantic Indexing represents a further step towards qualitative, more effective search results. Beyond keywords, synonyms, and homonyms, LSI allows for sorting results according to their relevance on a given theme.

You can thus search on Google for "Roger Federer", a professional tennis player, and find results about him, followed by results about upcoming tennis tournaments that do not even mention the name Roger Federer.

In this example, LSI enabled Google to understand that the world of tennis interests you, and the search engine selected articles on this theme that might therefore appeal to you, even though the word from your search does not appear in them.

SEO More Focused on User Experience

Previously, SEO and user experience were broadly considered separate concerns. An SEO-focused text sought to include specific key phrases in strategic positions. And this could come at the expense of user experience. The text was not necessarily readable or pleasant to read — sentences could be poorly constructed, words could be missing. All that mattered was placing a given key phrase as often as possible; the rest was secondary.

Today, search engines want to move towards a positive user experience. Latent Semantic Indexing aligns perfectly with this direction. It is no longer necessary to stick rigidly to a specific phrase; a synonym or terms that are thematically connected to the phrase allow for varied content that is readable and pleasing to the human eye.

Of course, this does not mean that the principle of key phrases should be abandoned altogether. They still have their purpose. But they are no longer the only tools of SEO. Synonyms and LSI now play their part too.

In summary, Latent Semantic Indexing helps search engines display more relevant results, based not only on key phrases but also on the theme displayed on a web page — which is recognised by search engines through the terms used.
