How to Manage Your WordPress Site Maintenance Effectively
WordPress is today renowned for its ease of use and great effectiveness, regardless of the nature of your site (blog, showcase site, e-commerce, or portfolio). But what many people can forget is that a good WordPress site requires upkeep and maintenance to stay as protected as possible. I am not talking here about creating content, but about ensuring its security to keep it in good shape — and without unnecessary hassle.
Minimise the Risks to Your WordPress Site
Indeed, even though a WordPress site is incredibly well built, it can very quickly run into serious problems if maintenance is neglected, such as:
- Increased page load times
- Poor security
- Diminished user experience
- Poor ranking on search engines
- Slower and more difficult to use
- Easy access for hackers
This list of unfortunately common situations can be avoided. We are therefore going to help you as much as possible with your WordPress site maintenance.
Invest Time in Upkeep
It is important to remember that WordPress needs to be maintained to function well. To give a simple analogy, it is like the central heating in your home: without regular care, it will perform less and less well, and repairing it can take considerable time and effort.
Regular Updates
Before thinking about updates, I want to draw your attention to the fact that it is always advisable to install the latest version of WordPress. This way, you will have access to all the new features and code updates, and will be aware of the various methods that ensure your website's security.
Above all, carrying out regular updates on your WordPress site means preventing hackers from gaining easy access and destroying months or even years of work. Before acting, take the time to gather information and keep up with the latest WordPress news. Some websites do this very well, such as the official WordPress blog "WPTavern".
When your site is ready to be updated, a notification appears in your dashboard. Ideally, you should act as quickly as possible, and do not forget the good habit of backing up your site beforehand.
Plugin Updates
What applies to WordPress is equally true for its components — namely plugins — which can become obsolete and open the door of your site to hackers. That is why plugin and theme authors regularly release updates for their products to ensure they continue to work properly. But, once again, the more up to date your WordPress version, the more secure your site and your plugins will be.
Should You Enable Automatic Updates on WordPress?
The answer is yes. Since WordPress 3.7, minor security and maintenance updates are applied automatically, and it is inadvisable to disable them. In any case, security updates very rarely risk causing damage to your site. It is therefore recommended to automate your updates.
Day-to-Day WordPress Website Maintenance Tasks
Imagine your WordPress site as a second home. To make your daily life more pleasant, you need to maintain it regularly, keep it tidy, and secure it against potential threats. Maintaining your site is simple. You just need to follow a few basic rules:
Respond to Comments
Often, WordPress blogs thrive on reader participation. If someone takes the time to write a comment on one of your articles, that in itself is a compliment that deserves to be acknowledged!
Comments also show that your site is active, which makes it more credible. That alone is a sufficient reason to respond, and a wonderful opportunity to grow faster! Therefore, taking care of comments is a plus for your WordPress site.
If you want to go a little further, you can schedule fixed time slots dedicated solely to responding to your comments — as well as your emails and social media interactions if you use them. Personally, I like to go a step further and schedule fixed slots twice a day during which I respond not only to comments but also to emails and social media interactions.
Back Up
Regular backups are THE most important tasks you must carry out on your WordPress site. Without backups, maintenance becomes pointless. Reduce the risks and you will not regret it if an incident occurs. In this regard, you have several options:
- Call on a maintenance service
- Find a good hosting provider that handles it for you
- Carry out backups yourself on a regular basis
- Use reliable plugins (BackupBuddy)
Review the Frontend of Your Site
Do not forget that your WordPress site is aimed at your visitors and users. Put them first and try to put yourself in their shoes to better evaluate your work as a whole.
Each week, try to rediscover your website as if you were a first-time visitor. You can also use this opportunity to check whether everything you see on the frontend is necessary or not — for instance, check whether your widget count is actually useful in the sidebar. You may not need twelve widgets in your sidebar when five would suffice. Do not hesitate to remove unnecessary elements.
Check Your Analytics
You can use Google Analytics to carry out a weekly review of your statistics, which will help you identify which content is performing well, spot user search trends, and ultimately get closer to your visitors. Google Analytics can also help you understand the state of your site and alert you to any major issues.
Remove WordPress Spam Comments
WordPress beginners are always surprised by the volume of spam comments on their sites. And it is difficult to identify spam at first glance. Therefore, in addition to using an antispam solution such as Antispam Bee, it is important to regularly delete unwanted comments — at least once a month.
Sort Drafts and Empty the Bin
Websites with multiple authors often accumulate a great deal of dead weight in the form of drafts or abandoned content. They clutter your workspace and make it heavier. To lighten the load, make a point of regularly deleting articles and pages that will never see the light of day. Also, adjust the bin time interval in wp-config.php to free up space more quickly. If you run a single-author website, doing this once a month should be sufficient.
Consolidate Plugins and Themes
In the search for additional features, you may well try five different plugins before finding the right one. But be careful — once you have made your decision, you may forget about the other four! To strengthen your site's security, make a point of removing unnecessary items, including deactivated plugins — which provide a very easy entry point for hackers.
Monitor for Malware and Signs of Hacking
Nobody likes to be hacked, but it is unfortunately a risk when you have a WordPress site online. The best strategy for dealing with this is to be proactive. By regularly checking for irregularities on your site, you can correct potential problems before a hacked site gets you blacklisted — or worse.
Identify Broken Links
For SEO enthusiasts, you may have a large number of links pointing to third-party sites or to your own site. But sometimes the corresponding sites or pages may be deleted or moved, resulting in a broken link. If you can, take the time to check your links and update them where necessary. You will notice a marked improvement in user experience.
Update Your Portfolio
If you use your site for promotional purposes, it is important to keep your online portfolio up to date. You could find yourself in some rather surprising situations if you do not. To prevent this from happening, make updating your portfolio part of your routine when finishing projects.
Validate Your WordPress Site
You will need to come to terms with the constant evolution of web technology. Nothing moves faster than action taken online, and core technologies such as HTML and CSS are updated continuously. It is worthwhile to occasionally check that your site still complies with current standards.
All of these tasks can indeed take up some of your time. But they are vital for keeping your WordPress site running. Several plugins can help you manage your schedule between maintenance and your professional activities.
But it can be very useful to call on a maintenance service, which, in addition to carrying out the various tasks mentioned above, can take on a great many more besides!
