Understanding SEO

Yumea·

> Definition of SEO:

An SEO agency brings together and implements all the techniques and best practices aimed at promoting a website's pages to the top positions in search engines. A well-optimised site therefore appears in the first results when an internet user conducts a search.

> Why SEO is so important:

Statistically, during a search query, only the first 2 pages of results are consulted. Being present on those pages can double the number of visits to a website. Like a traditional business, the more a site is visited, the more likely it is to convert a prospect into a client or physical contact. The revenue generated by the site therefore depends largely on its positioning in search engines.

> Organic SEO vs paid SEO:

Two types of SEO are distinguished: on one hand, organic SEO — what is commonly referred to simply as SEO and defined above — it is called "organic" because it submits the site's pages to search engine algorithms, whilst remaining dependent on the methods employed by market leaders such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, and others. On the other hand, commercial or paid SEO (also known as "sponsored links") corresponds to advertising space rented from search engines or advertising networks, which is often charged on a per-click basis. It guarantees a position on the first pages of results but proves very costly in the long term (a three-week Google campaign targeting five keywords costs on average around €4,000, depending on demand for the desired keywords).

> How to optimise your site's ranking:

The first step is to understand how search engines work. Google, for example, is a private company whose objective is to respond as effectively as possible to users' queries. To this end, it develops algorithms that sort results according to defined criteria. Google does not communicate about its algorithms, and they are in constant evolution. SEO is therefore an ongoing effort to stay up to date with the latest algorithm changes.

That said, certain best practices can be applied right from the creation of the site. When designing your website, we ensure that these best practices are followed and share them with you on our Tips and advice page.

> Conclusion:

SEO has become a matter for specialists, with miracle solutions disappearing day by day (as they were often based on exploiting a flaw in the algorithm and are now considered bad practice — see Tips and advice). Beware of false promises: it takes time before the first results can materialise (approximately 2 months), and in highly competitive sectors, rankings can shift rapidly. In a few years, competition will be increasingly fierce across all sectors as the number of websites multiplies and awareness of the importance of SEO grows.
